A 29-year-old Harare man has been sentenced to an effective 20 years after being convicted of raping his 17-year-old maid.

The sentence was handed down by Harare regional magistrate, Mrs Letwin Rwodzi, on Wednesday following a full trial.

The court found Tanaka Gunda guilty of rape based on overwhelming evidence presented by the State, which included a medical affidavit explicitly confirming sexual assault on the victim.

The court heard that on August 20, Gunda, who was the victim’s employer, was in his bedroom when the maid entered to collect clothes.

Gunda allegedly seized the opportunity and asked the complainant for sex in exchange for US$5.

When the victim refused, Gunda forcibly carried her to her room, threw her onto the bed, undressed and raped her.

Prosecutor Mr Loveti Muringwa successfully proved the case, leaving no doubt about Gunda’s guilt.

The court condemned his actions, noting the severe breach of trust and abuse of power.
