A MUSHIKASHIKA driver, lost his car to a man who was masquerading as a municipal traffic police officer in Harare’s CBD Centre on Monday, managed to use its tracking system to recover it on the same day.

Easton Govera, 45, of Mbare was approached by Nomatter Manuwere, 31, of Manyame Park for picking passengers at an undisgnated area at the corner of Cameroon Street and Fidel Castro Road.

Nomatter identified himself as a Harare Municipality Traffic Officer.

Easton was advised that he was under arrest for picking passengers at an undesignated spot and was ordered to drive to Harare Municipality Central Stores.

Upon arrival at the Central Stores main gate, Nomatter demanded a US$50 bribe.

He was given US$20 but insisted on being given the outstanding US$30.

The two proceeded to Copacabana where Easton was given the balance.

Nomatter requested to be dropped along Cameroon Street.

He ordered Easton to call his ‘colleagues,’ who were across the road, while he remained in the car.

Easton could not locate Nomatter’s colleagues and when he returned the fake municipality cop, and his car, were gone.

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the case saying Nomatter was arrested following a tracking system fitted on the vehicle.

“Police arrested a car thief who pretended to be a municipality traffic officer,” said Insp Chakanza.

“The complainant used the tracking system to track the vehicle and managed to locate its position at Zuva Matlock Service Station along Simon Mazorodze Road.

“The complainant proceeded to Zuva Matlock Service Station and found the accused person failing to start the engine, leading to the suspect’s arrest,” said Insp Chakanza.
