ONCE in a while a feel-good story comes along which also charms us as we report it to our readers.
Stories of heroism are part of this package of articles which really make us feel good in reporting about them.
One such story was the article we published last month about a fearless mother who was rightly being hailed as a hero after she jumped into a crocodile-infested river and managed to rescue her daughter, who had been attacked by a crocodile.
Gratitude Matiko, 11, was rescued by her heroic mother, Catherine Mambo, who jumped into the river, and rescued her from the crocodile’s jaws.
Gratitude was on the Hunyani River banks when she was attacked by the crocodile and managed to cry out for help.
Her mother was attending to her garden when she heard her daughter’s cries for help.
She rushed to the river and her instincts took over, fear disappeared from her body and she plunged into the river to try and save her daughter.
She knew the risk she was taking by plunging into the river because this is an area where the crocodile rules and there was a likelihood she could also have become a victim.
She knew there was a likelihood that the chaos in the river would attract more crocodiles and the reptiles would have ganged up and feasted on them.
But her motherly instincts were strong and she made a vow that she would rather die than leave her daughter to be killed and devoured
However, Mambo has revealed that she has been battling to settle the US$4 000 hospital bills and other expenses.
Her child, Gratitude, who is still recovering from a broken hand, is not yet back at school.
Gratitude was discharged from hospital last week, but has to visit the hospital every week for routine medical check-ups.
Mambo says the bills were taking their toll on her.

It’s sad that such a hero should find herself in such circumstances.
We are not saying that hospital bills should not be met but we are saying that there should be some Good Samaritans out there who should help her.
Her bravery should be rewarded and the least that we can do is to help her pay her bills.
There are a lot of wealthy men and women out there who should be in a position to not only underwrite her bills but also make sure that she is given something to help her, and her daughter, as they battle to recover from the injuries they sustained during the attack.
We expected that some of the organisations, which claim they champion women’s affairs, would have come on board a long time ago to help this hero.
She has shown other women, and even men, that saving a life is a bigger act than anything else.
She is a shining example and should be rewarded, in one way or the other, for her heroism.
She deserves the help.
