A 36-year-old Chitungwiza man was yesterday arrested for allegedly stealing tombstones at Unit L Cemetery.

Kudzai Madzikanda’s efforts to bribe two men, who caught him delivering the tombstones, with US$50, hit a brick wall, as they handed him over to the police.

It could not be established how many graves were affected, but the tombstones were delivered at Mukanya Business Centre premises.

Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Julius Chakanza, confirmed the arrest, saying one of the suspects is still on the run.

“Police in Chitungwiza are investigating a case involving a man, who was found delivering tombstones, suspected to have been removed from graves,” said Insp Chakanza.

“The accused person was confronted upon leaving a (place) at Mukanya premises where he was reported to have delivered the tombstones.

“The tombstones were loaded in a pushcart.

“He was in the company of an unidentified man who fled the scene.

“The accused person admitted to removing the tombstones from Unit L Cemetery. He was reported to have tried to bribe the informants with US$50 and they refused and handed him over to police.

“A pushcart, tombstones, wheel barrow, chisel and block oil were recovered.

“Police officers attended the scene and the case is now under investigation,” said Insp Chakanza.
