A 19-year-old man from Chitungwiza has been arrested following allegations he stole German shepherd dogs which he then sold to raise money to pay his rent.
It is alleged Colen Kadzviti broke into Shingirai Kaparas’ yard in July this year, at around 2am, and stole German shepherd dogs.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and has been ordered to perform community service.
“I admit stealing the dogs because I needed them.
“They are safe at the car park where l kept them with the intention of selling them.
“I used to work there and l wanted to supply the dogs there.
“The reason I committed the crime is because I wanted to pay rent since l live with my father’s niece and l contribute money for rentals.”
He added:
“I only do piece jobs where l earn US$5 per week, sometimes I do not get the piece jobs.
“In the meantime, l do not have a job since I left school at primary school level due to financial instability.
“I am pleading with the court to forgive me and I promise never to commit this crime again.”
The complainant, only identified as Shingirai, said:
“It is not his first time stealing.
“He once stole dogs of the same breed from other boys who went on to beat him and did not report the matter to the police.
“It is his second time he has stolen my dogs in a space of six months.”
