However Zifa technical director, Nelson Matongorere, yesterday expressed satisfaction with the majority of the coaches’ response to take up the rare offer.
About 38 local and foreign-based Zimbabwean coaches, who included national team mentor Rahman Gumbo and his predecessor Norman Mapeza, reported for camp which began at the Zifa Village on Sunday.
But notable absentees from the initial list of the invited coaches are Warriors assistant coaches Mandigora and Ndlovu, Mighty Warriors coach Rose Mugadza, Richard Tswatswa, Madinda Ndlovu and Cornwell Dube.
Matongorere said they had since filled some of the vacancies with candidates who had been on placed on standby.
“The response has been great. We invited 40 people and we have about 38 in camp. Fortunately those who failed to make it have been replaced by some of the candidates who had been put on standby,” he said.
The participants went through modules on the work of the coach and the methodology of coaching yesterday and had another session with Zifa board member competitions Benedict Moyo.
Matongorere prepared the coaches in the first two days ahead of the arrival of course facilitator Tanzanian Sunday Kayuni who is expected in Harare today. The official opening has been set for tomorrow.
Other Zimbabweans based outside the country like Lloyd Mutasa, Rodwell Dhlakama and Barry Dhaka have since come back home for the course.
Matongorere said the local coaches who include FC Platinum’s Rahman Gumbo, Tavaka Gumbo, Luke Masomere, Bigboy Mawiwi and Taurai Mangwiro will miss their clubs’ league games this weekend.
“They cannot afford to break camp. This is a full time course and they must clock the required hours to complete this course.
“Clubs shouldn’t worry much because that is the reason why they have a big technical team that sit on the bench. These coaches have a noble reason to miss this weekend’s games.
“They want to upgrade their credentials and it is the clubs that benefit from their knowledge in the long run.”
FC Platinum will travel to Bulawayo for an away test against Chicken Inn at Luveve on Saturday without Gumbo while both Luke Masomere and Tavaka Gumbo will leave duties to their assistants when their teams Shabanie Mine and Hardbody clash at Maglas.
Bigboy Mawiwi will also not be available for Harare City who host fellow newboys Quelaton at Gwanzura on Saturday.
The clubs have so far encountered different fortunes in their maiden campaigns. Quelaton have lost all their games while City are yet to taste defeat in four outings.
However, Harare City assistant coach Witness Munkuli yesterday said they are expecting their toughest test to come from Quelaton.
“The games that we have played are now water under the bridge. We are not looking at what Quelaton have done in their games.
“We are all new in the league and one thing for sure they wouldn’t want to be beaten by fellow debutants. So this should be the most difficult game,” said Munkuli.
