THE body of national hero Retired Major-General Herbert Chingono was this morning flown to his rural home in Rukweza, Makoni South Constituency.
Speaking at the funeral service, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, described Major-General Chingono as a dedicated soldier who served Zimbabwe with valour.
“Today, we bid farewell to a true hero who has received the highest national honour,” said Minister Mugadza, who was represented by the Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Abiot Maronge.
The province has lost two decorated national heroes this month, including Secretary for Harare Provincial Affairs, and Devolution, Cde Cosmas Chiringa, who passed away last week. The two will be buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on Monday.
Minister Mugadza extended condolences to the Chingono family on behalf of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Government.
He noted that Major-General Chingono’s passing was a shock to the province, coming just after the death of another national hero, Cde Chiringa.
Family spokesperson, Mr Langton Chingono described his brother as a principled and straightforward man who led the family well.
“He was a strict disciplinarian who preached unity and family cohesion,” he said.
ZANU PF provincial commissar, Cde Albert Nyakuedzwa said Major-General Chingono was a dedicated cadre who fought colonialism and championed land redistribution.
“He was a proponent of economic development and empowerment,” he said.
Major-General Chingono, born on January 29, 1958, was the eldest of 13 children.
He joined the liberation struggle in 1976, receiving military training in Mozambique and Romania, and continued to serve in the Zimbabwe National Army after independence until his retirement in 2024.
