MANICALAND will tomorrow (Saturday) host a fundraising dinner at Golden Peacock Hotel to raise money for the 21st Movement celebrations to be hosted by Masvingo next week. Briefing members of the national youth league executive who were in Mutare on Tuesday, the fundraising committee chairman, Cde Taurai Chiripamberi, said they were optimistic to get a positive turnout from the corporate world after leaving no stone unturned in the distribution of invitation letters.
Each province was given a target of $30 000 by the national youth league executive. “Our aim is to surpass the $30 000 target and I am confident we will raise more than that. Tables are ranging from $1 000 to $20 000 and we are optimistic to get the usual support from the Manicaland business community.
“We will have the diamond table category ($20 000), gold ($10 000), silver ($5 000) and bronze ($1 000). The door is also open to individuals for $100. It might seem expensive. but the idea is to give a befitting tribute to our President as an iconic figure throughout the continent.
“The importance of these celebrations can never be overstated as we will be celebrating the life of our iconic leader, President Mugabe,” said Cde Chiripamberi.
This year’s celebrations will be held at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments in Masvingo next Saturday. The President turns 92 on Sunday.
Speaking at the same occasion, deputy national secretary for youth affairs, Cde Kudzanayi Chipanga, said plans to turn the 21st February Movement celebrations into a national holiday were at an advanced stage.
“We want the commemorations to be called Youth Day and plans are already in the pipeline. Youths now constitute 65 percent of the population and we need to honour that and have a day to teach each other on the importance of cherishing our youth as crucial formative years. We will also be celebrating President Mugabe as our role model and iconic figure on the day,” said Cde Chipanga.
