Manyame Rural District Council has been applauded by President Mnangagwa for using part of its devolution funds to buy a refuse compactor for the collection of waste for proper disposal.
The council also used the devolution funds to procure a grader, which will be used in the upgrading of roads under its jurisdiction.
President Mnangagwa made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by Minister of Presidential Affairs and Monitoring of Government Programmes Dr Joram Gumbo during the national clean-up held at Dema Business Centre in Mashonaland East last Friday. Dema and its rural district council abut on the south-eastern boundary of Harare Metropolitan.
Before delivering President Mnangagwa’s speech, Dr Gumbo commissioned the refuse compactor, an advanced garbage truck, and the grader.
“I would like to applaud Manyame Rural District Council for using part of its devolution funds to procure a refuse compactor for the collection of waste for proper disposal,” he said.
“Waste management issues continue to be a problem in some parts of the country and these issues need a holistic approach, hence the launch of this programme by the Second Republic to entrench a sustainable culture in waste management.
“Let us appreciate that there is rapid urbanisation in our nation, and to that end, my Government implores all local authorities to carry out environmental impact assessments for housing developments, incorporating proper waste management plans for the residential areas. Local authorities must endeavour to have waste management plans for all areas under their jurisdiction by 31 December of each year.”
President Mnangagwa said all councils remain the authors of the vision that Zimbabwe wants and the fulfilment of international obligations and resolutions.
To that end, the President called for prioritisation of synergies through private-public-partnerships to ensure waste management challenges are holistically and sustainably dealt with.
He also implored local authorities to allow corporates to adopt green open spaces as a way of discouraging mushrooming of illegal dumpsites and areas of overgrown grass and vegetation.
“In a way, we will increase the aesthetic value of our environment and even transform some of these areas to recreational facilities for the local and foreign tourism. It takes a committed and united citizenry to create the future we want, such as a clean environment,” said the President.
Seke legislator Cde Munyaradzi Kashambe said the recognition by President Mnangagwa was testimony that the Manyame RDC was working hard.
“We are thankful to the President for recognising Manyame Rural District Council and also making sure devolution funds are there. I urge all other local authorities to work hard and contribute to the attainment of Vision 2030.
“With this equipment procured by Manyame RDC, Seke will never be the same again in terms of service delivery to the people.”
