FRESH from knocking out an opponent in just 162 seconds, boxing sensation Charles Manyuchi paid a pleasant visit to young boxers at the National Boxing Championship held in the Midlands Province town of Shurugwi.
The surprise visit was kept under wraps from the budding boxers until the renowned boxer showed up at the event.
The World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight silver title holder to mixed and mingled with young pugilists.
Manyuchi also gave a motivational talk encouraging the young boxers to work hard and stay grounded in order to scale to greater heights in boxing.
On 14 October Manyuchi floored Columbian opponent Jose Augustin Julio Feria in a World Boxing Council (WBC) non-title fight in two minutes and 42 seconds at the Harare International Conference Centre.
Over 100 boxers from across the country met at the Ironsides community hall in Shurugwi for the annual National Boxing Championships hosted by the Midlands Boxing Association (MBA).
a�?Manyuchi is now a powerful brand in his own right and when we requested that he grace the National Boxing Championships in Shurugwi last weekend he gladly accepted.
a�?He interacted with the young boxers the whole day during the tournament and it was very humbling to see a world renowned boxer giving the kids tips and words of advice,a�? said Midlands Boxing Association vice-chairperson Sarudzai Boroma.
Meanwhile, the Victoria Falls Boxing Academy will be sending 15 boxers for an open boxing tournament that will see teams coming from the countrya��s 10 provinces converging on the Matabeleland South Province capital Gwanda on Saturday.
a�?We are a self-funded boxing academy which makes it difficult for us to send boxers to tournaments hosted outside of Victoria Falls but a local sponsor called Victoria Falls Liqourama pledged to fund our trip to Gwanda,a�? said academy coach trainer Tobias Owen Muposiwa.
The Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) will also be sending a team to Gwanda.
