South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela has added songbird Ammara Brown to his growing list of collaborations with Zimbabwean artistes.
Masekela earlier in the year announced that he had wrapped up his collaboration with Victor Kunonga on the Chiwoniso Maraire inspired collaborative album Shai Shai with a release date tentatively set for Easter.
Masekela has been virtually resident in Harare for the past year, having been allocated a home by Oliver Mtukudzi while the pair works on their own joint album.
However, Ammara, the daughter of the legendary Andy Brown, might beat the two to the punch in releasing a Masekela assisted song, after she revealed last week that the pair had finished work on a song that she was eager to let fans hear.
a?Bless! I was in studio with Brah @HughMasekela <https://twitter.com/hughmasekela> We recorded a?Next Lifetimea?! Canat wait to release it!a? tweeted a seemingly excited Ammara.
Masekela on his part was also excited about the collaboration, saying that true artistic expression was dependent on the spirit of sharing. Masekela has been noted for his carefree spirit towards collaborations, having also worked with Berita Khumalo and a host of young and upcoming musicians in various genres.
a?You learn more and do better as an artiste if you work with others and one thing that I have learnt is that working with younger artistes also helps your vitality as an artiste,a? he said.
Masekela has been on a collaborative spree with Zimbabwean artistes in the last few years after he revealed his Zimbabwean roots during an interview with Star FM two years ago, saying that his great grandfather had come from Great Zimbabwe as part of the Karanga people who were later adopted by the Tonga people. He also revealed that his real surname was Munyepawu.
