A promising Ndebele author Maqhawe Masuku has vowed to escalate his work of art to another level in an effort to preserve the Ndebele culture.
The highly talented author-cum-poet who authored a novel titled Ukungazi kufana lokufa is a champion of traditional and cultural practices, which communities must employ.
He decried the situation on the ground saying that it is sad that most young people are losing out in terms of our culture and general practices of being Ndebele.
“We’ve seen a lot of kids failing to become responsible citizens because of the new ways of life which they do not comprehend. Nowadays, there are a lot of changes even in terms of behaviour due to migration and a lot of factors.
“This has seen a lot of people losing that cultural lustier which was found in the Ndebele community. It’s so sad that people no longer value and respect ubuntu bethu. Some of these new practices which are being done by the youth I captured in my novel. I will take some of the themes in my novel and share them with kids in my community before I expand to other places,” he said.
Masuku said he will be launching Ukungazi kufana lokufa, a novel that was published by Pathisa Nyathi under his publishing company Amagugu, in Filabusi on October 28. He will also take the event as the springboard to reach out to many people who have since lost their values and culture.
Over the years, Masuku has continued with his poetry footprint taking part in various events where he is known for verbosity and lyrical prowess when it comes to issues of articulating culture-related issues.
The author was born and bred in Filabusi and most of his teaching derives from the community in which he was raised. – @SeehYvonne
