Masvingo commemorates World AIDS Day

Masvingo Province held its belated World AIDS Day 2024-2025 commemorations at Gwindingi Grounds in Bikita today, drawing attention to the response to HIV/AIDS and the importance of awareness and prevention.

Running under the theme “Take the rights path: My health, my right, our responsibility”, the event was organised by the Ministry of Health and Child Care and the National AIDS Council.

The theme emphasises the importance of prioritising human rights in the fight against HIV and AIDS, particularly for vulnerable and marginalised populations.

Provincial Government officials, health workers, traditional leaders and community members attended the event.

In his keynote address at the event, Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary, Mr Admore Pazvakavambwa who was represented by Ms Rosemary Chingwe, Director of Coordination in his office, emphasised the need for continued education and testing.

“Based on the deliberate initiatives implemented by the Government of Zimbabwe in line with the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, our response to HIV has seen significant gains being recorded across the province and beyond.

“We must break the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS and ensure that everyone has access to treatment and support,” said Mr Pazvakavambwa.

NAC Masvingo provincial manager, Mr Munyengetero Masunga highlighted the country’s gains in fighting HIV nd AIDS.

Mr Masunga said they are working closely with the Ministry of Health and Child Care and other stakeholders to reduce new infections and promote the uptake of ART.

Various local organisations that offer health services participated at the event, offering free services, including HIV testing and counselling, cervical cancer screening and family planning services, among others.

The health booths provided information on prevention methods, including the importance of using antiretroviral therapy (ART) and safe sex practices.

Organisers reported a significant turnout, with hundreds of attendees taking advantage of the services offered.

World AIDS Day is commemorated annually on December 1st to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, remember those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses, and show support for people living with HIV.
