After successful shows locally and internationally over the last two years, popular play, “The Gods You’ve Built” returns to its “home” at the Youth Cultural Arts Festival (YOCAF) set for Masvingo from July 30-August 1.
The play has been a big hit since its premiere at the Charles Austin Theatre in Masvingo two years ago.
It returns to its premier stage to light up YOCAF, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. The play is among many other arts products that will be showcased during the annual fete.
“The Gods You’ve Built” is a National Arts and Merit Awards nominee written by Tawanda Mutero Kanengoni and directed by Leeroy Gono.
The play has received excellent reviews both at home and abroad.
It was rated one of the best plays at the Harare International Festival of the Arts in 2014 and it continues to mesmerise audiences.
The production was last on stage last year during ITS East African tour when it showcased at the Sondeka Festival in Kenya.
Yocaf management said they were excited about bringing one of Masvingo’s biggest exploits back home.
“A lot of people in Masvingo had not seen this piece and our young people will certainly enjoy and at the same time learn from the professional act,” said Michael Kalongonda, the programmes manager.
The play resonates with audiences as it asks questions that move through people’s minds all the time but which they dare not say.
The acting is top-notch with perfectly timed moments of comic relief from the seriousness of the tragedy as the play unfolds.
The principal characters in the play are a professor who has all but lost hope in the meaning of his philosophies and struggles to come to terms with the death of his son; a nun who has lost her faith and grasps on to anything that might afford her a semblance of meaning in life and a drunken police officer caught up in the vortex of the destructive nature of the other two characters’ loss of hope and mean- ing.
The actors – all Theory X graduates – Precious Mudzingwa, Dereck Nziyakwi and Leeroy Gono deliver flawless performances.
