NKAYI High School will play host to the Matabeleland North inter-district Under-15 and 17 handball finals tomorrow.
Chairman of the Matabeleland North Handball Association, Churchill Mabasa, said Bubi, Hwange, Umguza, Nkayi and Binga districts would be represented by their champions at the finals.
Winners will represent the province at the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) finals in Harare.
Each district will provide two boys’ teams and as many girls’ in both age-groups.
Mabasa said handball is still developing in the province, but is disappointed with other districts which are shunning the sport.
“Handball has become a competitive sport so we expect good competition at the finals.
It’s a shame that only five of seven districts are taking part. Tsholotsho and Lupane districts are shunning the sport. We have been trying so hard but they are not responding,” he said.
Mabasa said they had approached authorities to conduct coaching clinics in Tsholotsho and Lupane as part of a programme to promote handball in the region.
“We have written to the deputy education director to ask for a go ahead and conduct a coaching clinic in these districts and we have been given the go ahead, we hope they will respond,” he said.
The Under-20 inter-districts finals will be held on June 27 at David Livingstone Secondary School in Ntabazinduna while the national finals are set for Bulawayo in July.
