HARARE Mayor Jacob Mafume has thrown his weight behind the Selekta Base Foundation after it distributed food hampers to elderly residents, and people living with disabilities, in Sunningdale at the weekend.
The Selekta Base Foundation is led by businessman Arnold Tinashe Chigwerewe, whose philanthropic work has steadily expanded across Harare’s high-density suburbs.
Since its inception, the Selecta Base Foundation has made a name for itself through its blowout festivals, which combine thrilling car burnouts with live music, dance, and vibrant community gatherings.
These events draw crowds from across the city, turning ordinary weekends into major entertainment spectacles.
Beyond the excitement, the festivals have created temporary employment opportunities for the youths and small businesses, providing a boost to local commerce. Chigwerewe has used the foundation as a platform to give back to communities.
Through initiatives like the Sunningdale donation, the foundation channels proceeds from its festivals to support the elderly, underprivileged families and local charities.
Mafume participated in the distribution of the food hampers.
He commended the Selekta Base Foundation for complementing Government and local authorities in their social welfare programmes.
Mafume said partnerships between civic leaders, civil society, and ordinary citizens were essential in addressing social challenges and strengthening social cohesion.
Mafume also used the opportunity to address residents on service delivery challenges affecting Harare. He acknowledged concerns over water shortages, sewer system breakdowns, and deteriorating road infrastructure in some areas of the city.
“We are aware of these challenges and are working with the Government to implement solutions,” said Mafume
Chigwerewere said:
“You do not have to wait until you are rich to help those in need. Giving back starts with compassion, unity, and action.”
