MDC-T councillors, MPs will not be missed

The MDC-T faction led by Morgan Tsvangirai is excogitating withdrawing councillors and members of Parliament from councils and Parliament respectively as a way of forcing ZANU PF out of power. That move is a gross political miscalculation that, if it sees the light of the day, would spell the end of the MDC-T. It is also a ridiculous strategy for we cannot fathom out how the withdrawal of its members would propel the MDC-T into power. We cannot also appreciate how that ludicrous move would force Zanu PF out of power.

Those threats are mere irritating barks of a puppy that will never deter an elephant. Zanu PF government will not stop its operations because the MDC-T has withdrawn its rank marshal turned councillors from the councils. The same goes with the noise-making legislators.

In any case, the withdrawal of the MDC-T elected officials will be a blessing in disguise to the nation. The MDC-T MPS have not been contributing meaningfully to the development of this nation save to make noise in the august house, the noise of which obstructed serious developmental deliberations by Zanu PF legislators.

The councillors have been involved in graft that crippled most of the councils. Most of the councillors got into councils with virtually nothing. Some of them were former rank marshals with no educational aptitude or any other skills. At one time, Muchadeyi Masunda admitted this fact. He commended that the MDC-T councillors entered into council without even bicycles under their names.

Today, the same councillors are living large with fleets of cars, houses, residential and commercial stands, courtesy of corruption though. They have become a typical testimony of a proverbial man from rags to riches.

Even the Party leadership itself was taken aback by the sudden filth opulence of their councillors. The leadership admitted the pervasiveness of the unbridled corruption among its councillors, hence it instructed the Party’s Secretariat for Local Government to investigate. The investigation was, however, just a window- dressing, designed to make people believe the party was against corruption. Only a few councillors were sacrificed.

In an interview with VOA Studio 7, the MDC-T Secretary for Local Government then, Sesel Zvidzai described corruption in his party saying, “the party was shocked to find that street kids, who had just become mayors, who had no toothpaste nor toothbrush had got a fleet of vehicles now and expensive houses.”

These councillors have not initiated any significant development since they took charge of most councils in urban areas. Under their stewardship, potholes have by far outnumbered the cars on the roads. Service delivery is on the ebb.

Corrupt activities that range from, inter alia, tender manipulation, illegal eviction of residents, kickbacks, fraud, embezzlement, selling non-existing stands, obscene salaries and allowances have been characterising MDC-T dominated councils.

Corruption within the MDC-T- run councils resulted in, among others, sheer poor service delivery, lack of enough, clean and consistent water supply, sewage burst and water borne diseases like typhoid and cholera.

People will surely not miss such councillors a bit and their withdrawal would be a blessing in disguise.
However, although I have some reservations with these councillors and MPs, their democratic right to be in councils and parliament must be defended to the death. The people voted these people into councils and parliament, notwithstanding their flaws in conduct, As such, only this electorate has the democratic right to remove them, anywhere 2018 is coming soon enough.

Tsvangirai and his horde of losers in the national council cannot wake up and unilaterally decide to pull out the councillors and MPS. Only those found guilty of graft can be fired without factoring in any considerations, as this will be done in the interest of the electorate.

Thus, the elected MDC-T officials must stand firm against the proposal to vacate seats.Tafara Shumba
