Mhangura mine set to reopen

out- put worth over US$80 million following the firming of copper prices on the world market in recent years.
Speaking to journalists at the Chinhoyi Press Club, Mhangura legislator Dr Douglas Mombeshora said initial studies a few years ago were found to be less attractive to the investors as only US$20 million was set to be realised over a five-year period.

“There are efforts currently being made to bring on board investors who will work on resuscitating operations at the Mhangura Mine and indications are that interest is on reclaiming the mine dump which has potential for output of various minerals including copper,” he said.

Resuscitation of operations, he said, has potential to employ hundreds of people including the mine’s former workers.
Cde Mombeshora said work will include upgrading of a smelter at Alaska Mine.

He, however, refused to shed more light on the identity of the potential investors.
The Health and Child Welfare Deputy Minister also hailed the land reform programme for providing a source of livelihood to thousands of workers made redundant at Alaska and Mhangura Mines.
