Minister happy with response to Anti-Corruption body

GOVERNMENT has said the public has shown confidence in the works of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) hence the high number of people who have been nominated for the anti-graft body.

A total of 133 individuals have been successfully nominated to take up eight commissioners’ posts in the anti-corruption constitutional body.

Parliamentary Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) published the successful nominees and is set to conduct public interviews for nominated individuals.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to appoint new Zacc chairperson and commissioners following the resignation of its members earlier this year.

CSRO will forward to the President names of short-listed names who will appoint commissioners to lead the anti-corruption fight.

In an interview, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary and Affairs Minister Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi said the desire to weed out corruption is what prompted a high number of people being nominated for the anti-graft positions.

“I think it’s a good thing when you see so much interest in the anti-corruption. It shows that people are taking the corruption fight seriously. They want to participate and ensure that we eradicate the scourge of corruption. That’s the most important thing, that there is belief that this constitutional body is necessary, it should be capacitated and individuals feel proud to be associated with it hence the high number of people who have applied,” said Minister Ziyambi, who is also a member of CSRO.

“So us the CSRO we feel that it’s a progressive thing. We feel that it will allow the best people to be short-listed for onward transmission to His Excellency.”

He said having so many people expressing their interests is progressive and should be lauded.

“You can also see that the nominees are from all walks of life and some individuals that you never thought would apply have shown desire to leave whatever they are doing to join the anti-corruption fight. Some of them, you can see that they are not motivated by any monetary reward or anything but the desire to be associated to that body and fight corruption,” he said.

Prominent and some unheralded influential people in society have been nominated to for Zacc. Among the individuals who have been nominated include ex-cop and a director in a security company Mr Smile Dube, top lawyer Advocate Greyson Nyoni, former Hwange Town Secretary Mr Thembelani Ncube, a Local Government expert Ms Thandiwe Mlobani, chartered accountant Mr Crispen Mwete and former top cop Mr Norman Sibanda, among others.

Mr Dube said without seemingly canvassing for a position, he would want to contribute in the fight against corruption.

“The manifestation of corruption is something that needs to be dealt with. There is rampant corruption both in public and private sector. However, I’m not sure whether it’s the right time to comment as I’m not canvassing for appointment. But if I’m selected through the interview process I will bring my investigations skills to the table as a former cop,” said Mr Dube.

Some of the individuals shared Mr Dube’s concerns that they do not want to comment as it might seem they are campaigning to be elected to the constitutional body.
