Thupeyo Muleya, Beitbridge Bureau
Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Albert Nguluvhe, has arrived in Beitbridge to officially launch an anti-smuggling campaign aimed at curbing the illegal movement of prohibited and banned goods, including drugs, through the country’s busiest inland port.

The campaign is being supported by Cross Borders for Economic Development, a grouping of transporters and traders who operate along Zimbabwe’s borders.
Speaking during a brief tour and clean-up of the Beitbridge border post Minister Nguluvhe said smuggling was bleeding the fiscus and undermining legitimate business at Beitbridge Border Post.

He also advised the cross border transporters and traders to always carry out their work within the confines of the law.
The anti-smuggling programme seeks to raise awareness among transporters, clearing agents, vendors and commuters about the dangers and economic impact of smuggling.

It will also support ongoing Government programmes led by ZIMRA, ZRP, and other border agencies to detect and deter the movement of banned goods and narcotics.
Organisers said cross border transporters were key to the campaign’s success because they interact daily with travellers and traders at the border post and along transit routes.
