Gokwe-Kana, Midlands Province— THE Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, officially commissioned a solar-powered borehole and a nutrition garden utilizing drip irrigation at Dzvuke Primary School on September 11, 2024.
The initiative is part of the Government’s efforts to address water shortages exacerbated by climate change.
Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) drilled the borehole under the Presidential Borehole Scheme, which focuses on providing sustainable water solutions to vulnerable communities in ecological regions 4 and 5. Areas such as Gokwe South have been prioritised for the installation of solarised boreholes in schools and local business units.

Minister Ncube emphasised the importance of these projects in enhancing food security and improving the living conditions of residents in drought-prone regions.
“This initiative is crucial for empowering our communities to combat the effects of climate change and ensuring that our children have access to clean water and nutritious food,” he stated during the commissioning ceremony.
The nutrition garden, established alongside the borehole, aims to provide fresh produce for the school and surrounding community, promoting better health and dietary practices among pupils. This project aligns with the national goal of achieving food security as outlined in the Vision 2030 framework.
Local leaders and community members expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its potential to transform the lives of families in the region.
As the Government continues to implement strategies to mitigate climate-related challenges, the commissioning of the solar-powered borehole and nutrition garden marks a significant step toward sustainable development in Midlands Province.
