BULAWAYO will break new ground this week when it becomes the first province to compete against Government ministries at the Inter-Ministerial Games, and Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, has urged Team Bulawayo to carry the city’s pride with distinction.

The Games, set for tomorrow through Friday at the United College of Education, mark a turning point in the annual competition that has traditionally pitted ministries against each other. For the first time, a provincial side will line up alongside them.

Speaking at the team presentation ceremony at Mhlahlandlela Government Complex Conference Hall on Friday, Minister Ncube said Bulawayo’s inclusion is not only about results, but about showcasing unity and excellence.

“We wish Team Bulawayo good luck as our representatives who will be competing in the Inter-Ministerial Games hosted here at the United College of Education. Team Bulawayo is the first to compete as a province against other ministries and we are proud of that,” she said.

This year’s edition will run under the theme “Fitness First, Strengthening Bonds Through Sport.” Football, volleyball, netball, chess, athletics, darts, tug-of-war and even a modelling contest are part of the programme.

Minister Ncube told the delegation that the Games go beyond medals.

“This moment marks an exciting chapter for our athletes, coaches and supporting staff as they embark on this journey to showcase their talents and dedication on a national stage. Your participation embodies the spirit of sportsmanship, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence we value deeply in Bulawayo. You are the pride of the province and I have no doubt you will represent us with honour and distinction.”

She also praised the team’s discipline and consistency in health programmes.

“I commend the hard work, discipline and commitment that has brought you to this moment, including the Wednesday wellness programmes you participate in. Continue giving us your best. May you demonstrate the values of fair play and respect that define great athletes. Know that you have the full support of your agencies, families, coaches and the community. We are with you every step of the way.”

Ncube added that the Games have the potential to evolve into a regional civil service festival.

“As you compete, embrace the experience with passion, strive for excellence and cherish the bonds and team building. Hosting such a festival shows our Government is taking health and wellness seriously. It is my anticipation that these Games will one day grow into Regional Civil Service Games that enhance regional integration.”

She extended gratitude to the organisers, particularly the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, for driving the event forward.

Team Bulawayo head of delegation, Tapiwa Sikwila, said the players were determined to give their all.

“They want to defend the royalty of Bulawayo. They have promised to sacrifice themselves and get hold in these Games. They are going for Honourable Minister,” said Sikwila.

To cap the event, Minister Ncube handed over football kits, cones, bibs and soccer balls to aid the team’s preparations.
