Miss Universe 2024 heats up: Preliminary rounds start with National Costume Show

For the first time in 17 years, Mexico will host the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant: Miss Universe. The event will take place at the Arena CDMX in the northern part of Mexico City, where 130 of the world’s most beautiful women will compete for the coveted title in the 73rd edition of the competition. The glitzy event will air live for Central African viewers at 4am on November 17.

Over the past few weeks, the contestants have had the opportunity to explore Mexico’s rich culture, with trips to historic locations like Merida, Guadalajara, and the iconic pyramids of Teotihuacan. Representing Zimbabwe at the event is Sakhile Dube.

The Miss Universe 2024 pageant officially began on Monday with a series of activities for the participants. On Thursday, the competition will heat up with the preliminary rounds, which include the National Costume Show, where each contestant showcases their country’s traditional attire. The famous Swimsuit Parade will also take place on the same day, with the top 25 finalists selected.

The selection committee, made up of beauty experts, will choose 25 finalists, along with four regional candidates from Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. The final semi-finalist will be chosen via popular vote before the grand final on Saturday, November 16, at Arena Ciudad de Mexico.

Following the preliminary competition, there will be a Crown cocktail opening, a farewell tea with outgoing Miss Universe Sheynnis Palacios, and the final events. The 12 finalists will be announced on November 16, and the grand finale will take place on Sunday, November 17.

The competition will feature multiple stages, including personal interviews, national costumes, evening gowns, and the ever-popular swimsuit parade.

The new Miss Universe will succeed Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua, who was crowned Miss Universe 2023 and will pass on the crown to the next champion.
