Miss Valentine crowned in style

NEITHER the heartbreaking absence of urban groover, Leonard Mapfumo, nor the withdrawal of several models on the 11th hour could spoil this year’s edition of the Miss Valentine’s modelling contest held at Courtauld Theatre last Saturday. Only four out of the expected 15 models strutted their stuff on the romp and everyone virtually emerged a winner.

Vimbai Mukorera (19) was coronetted Miss Valentine’s, while Gay Mushaninga (21) and Charlene Sithole (20) were crowned first and second princesses respectively. Queen Alicia was the Miss Personality.

Leonard Mapfumo who seemingly changed his mind on the day of the event had posted on the social network, Facebook, earlier saying he was determined to stage a memorable show in Mutare before failing to come. It later emerged that he had a show in Harare.
It was a clear case of double booking.

Several models, mostly teenagers, who were scheduled to take part in the pageant failed to contest because of various reasons such as parents’ disapproval.
“It seems most of them did not seek approval from their parents or guardians,” said one of the organisers, Nyaradzo Muchemenye.

“We urge aspiring models to first agree with their parents before registering to take part in contests like these. They should stop playing with our minds and be at least professional and mature. This helps us to have a plan and clear picture of the people we will be dealing with. We are, however, happy that the pageant went on well,” said Muchemenye.

Vimbai walked away with a dinner, bed and breakfast voucher for two at Golden Peacock Hotel, while Gay won a bed and breakfast voucher for two at the same hotel.
Charlene won a dinner voucher for two.

Local artistes such as Xtra Maton, Amagruvaz, Unit Edge, Reflections, Blacka di Blocka and Ras Henry provided entertainment.
In separate interviews, the winners were elated.

“I never expected to win. It was quite a surprise. I am happy and hope to continue with this career I am starting to take modelling seriously. I am grateful to my family for their unwavering support,” said the gorgeous Vimbai.

The crowd favourite, Charlene, who was crowned first princess in last year’s Miss Summer beauty pageant held at the same venue, said: “It was a tight contest, but I am happy that I emerged as one of the best. Obviously I am happy.”
