December 20 will see beauties from around the world congregate for the Miss World pageant in Washington DC, although it is still uncertain whether Zimbabwe will be one of the countries represented at this yearas pageant. The country is far from finding its winner despite missing the competition deadline.
Despite failing to meet the July 29 deadline, Zimbabwe still has a chance to take part in the pageant as it is not the only country yet to confirm its participation in the competition that is set to begin in earnest at the end of November under its a?Beauty with a Purposea? banner.
The pageant announced last week that although the majority of the 130 plus countries that are set to participate in this yearas pageant had already confirmed their representatives, others seemed to be far from doing so.
While announcing that debuting or returning participants Rwanda, St Lucia, Madagascar and Cook Islands had already confirmed their winners, the pageant also noted that Bangladesh would only hold its pageant on 28 October, only a month before the Miss World competition starts.
Pacific nation Guam is also set to hold its pageant on 12 October, although orientation of candidates has already begun.
Meanwhile, Kenya is also in a quagmire, after its winner Roshanara Ebrahim was stripped of her title after an alleged illicit affair with a government official.
With the Miss World pageant giving leeway to local organisers it remains to be seen whether organisers of the Zimbabwean edition will take the opportunity to finally put to bed the pageant which has been delayed for various reasons since February.
a?As a matter of fact, our sponsors have advised us that if we donat get girls that have the potential to represent the country, we can postpone the event.
a?We are still conducting the final selection and as soon as we are done, we shall announce to the nation the way forward,a? pageant spokesperson Tendai Chirau said. .
