BANTAM weight boxer Monica Mkandla produced a polished and commanding performance to defeat South Africa’s Thema Zuma by a unanimous decision in a non-title bout at Emperor’s Palace on Saturday night.
The contest, staged as part of the Sole Survivor tournament, had been billed as a stern test for the Gwanda-born fighter, who came up against a vastly experienced opponent in Zuma.
Entering the bout with an unbeaten record, Mkandla faced a boxer who had competed in 20 professional fights and previously held multiple South African titles.
However, any pre-fight expectations of a closely contested battle quickly faded as Mkandla took control from the opening bell. Displaying composure beyond her years, the Zimbabwean dictated the tempo with sharp footwork, accurate punching and disciplined ring management.
Nicknamed “Savage,” Mkandla effectively neutralised Zuma’s experience, keeping her on the back foot for most of the fight. Her superior speed and precision allowed her to land clean combinations while avoiding sustained pressure from the South African.
Zuma, known as “Stone Cold,” showed resilience and durability but struggled to cope with Mkandla’s sustained aggression and tactical awareness, ultimately falling short on all three judges’ scorecards.
The victory saw Mkandla extend her unbeaten professional record to 9-0, further cementing her status as one of Zimbabwe’s fastest-rising boxing prospects.
Mkandla’s triumph is particularly significant given the calibre of her opponent.
Zuma, a former South African champion, had been expected to test the Mnkandla’s ability to handle experienced fighters. Instead, Mkandla delivered a mature performance that underlined her growing ring intelligence and readiness for higher-level competition.
The win also comes at a time when Mkandla is receiving increasing recognition on the domestic front.
She was recently nominated again for the Annual National Sports Awards Female Boxer of the Year accolade, with the ceremony set for May.
Currently, the African Boxing Union (ABU) SADC bantamweight champion, Mkandla, continues to build an impressive résumé.
Her latest performance is likely to strengthen her case for bigger fights on the continental stage.
