THE avenging spirit of a Mutare man who was allegedly murdered by his wife is believed to be killing family members every year.

This emerged when Mwanasawani Mvundura dragged her nephews Givemore and Tapiwa Maoneni to Mutare Civil Court seeking a peace order against them after they dumped their bedridden mother, Gogo Sarah Mvundura, at her homestead.

The court heard that when the family appeared before Chief Mutambara, Gogo Mvundura confessed that she killed her husband in cold blood.

Givemore and Tapiwa are therefore adamant that they will not take their mother back until their father’s spirit is appeased.

Givemore insists that they will only accept her back after their father’s avenging spirit which is wreaking havoc and killing family members every year has been appeased.

“They want us to take our mother back home because they don’t want to be accountable for what she did. Our mother confessed that she chocked our father to death. She then suffered a stroke and she told us that it is part of the pain being inflicted on her by our father’s avenging spirit.

“Chief Mutambara ordered us to appease the avenging spirit, but they do not want to cooperate, hence their decision to approachg the civil court, yet the case is still pending before Chief Mutambara’s court,” said Givemore.

He added: “We have been taking our mother to different doctors, but her condition continues to deteriorate. That is why she opened up about what she did to our father.”

Tapiwa chipped in: “Death is visiting us every year. The moment our mother steps into our Maoneni homestead, we risk losing our children. That is why Chief Mutambara ruled that our father’s spirit avenging spirit must be appeased.”

He said his father’s spirit manifested on his child describing how he was killed by his mother.

“My father died when my son was just a baby but when my son manifested, he mimicked his grandfather’s characteristics and voice and everyone was convinced by what he was saying,” said Tapiwa.

Mwanasawani, however, said she cannot take care of Gogo Mvundura as she is only her sister-in-law. She was married to Gogo Mvundura’s brother who is now late.

“Culturally I am not in a position to nurse my ailing aunt. The Maonenis should come and collect their mother. She cannot even stand on her own or go to the toilet. I have to clean her up every day and that is not my responsibility,” argued Mwanasawani.

Mutare magistrate, Mr Xavier Chipato granted the peace order she was applying for and ordered the Maonenis to take their mother from the Mvunduras and find a caregiver for her somewhere.

However, the two brothers remained defiant and said they would rather be imprisoned than accept their mother back before the appeasement of their father’s avenging spirit.
