A MAN who drove a bus from Harare to Mayo despite not having a valid driver’s licence has been jailed for putting the lives of 40 passengers at risk.
Bugner Mafukidze (49) of Mabvazuva in Rusape was sentenced to effective two years imprisonment by magistrate, Mr Obedience Matare.
Mr Matare further barred Mafukidze from driving public vehicles for the rest of his life.
He was also barred from driving any other vehicle for the next six months.
Mafukidze, who was not represented and pleaded guilty, said he only drove the bus after the actual driver felt sick along the way.
Prosecutor, Mrs Oripa Sagandira said Mafukidze drove a Hwenje Tours Bus with 40 passengers on board.
“On June 20 and at Rugwizi Turn-off in Mayo, the accused person was driving a public service vehicle, a Yutong bus with 40 passengers on board.
“Mafukidze approached a roadblock manned by four police officers. He was stopped and asked to produce a driver’s licence. He confessed that he was not a holder of a valid driver’s licence.
“Verifications with the Central Vehicle Registry were made and there was no record in his name, thereby leading to his arrest,” said Mrs Sagandira.
