Motion to convey condolences to Mujuru family adopted

its condolences to the Mujuru family.

Mwenezi East MP Cde Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, moved the motion soon after his death.
Cde Bhasikiti yesterday thanked all the legislators who debated the motion.

He said: “From the contributions made across the political divide, it shows that Zimbabwe lost a gallant son, a dedicated freedom fighter and a unifier.
“He left a void that would be difficult to fill, it shows that political pluralism doesn’t mean antagonism.”

Cde Bhasikiti said Zimbabweans have a lot to learn from the life of the late Gen Mujuru.
Gen Mujuru died in a fire accident at his farm in Beatrice in August and was buried at the National Heroes Acre.

However, before the adoption of the motion, MDC-T’s Mkoba legislator Mr Amos Chibaya, drew controversy when he said Zanu PF’s rank and file was filled with gays and lesbians.
Mbire legislator Cde Paul Mazikana (Zanu-PF) raised a point of order and asked Mr Chibaya to withdraw his statement or provide evidence to substantiate his claims.
Mr Chibaya then gave examples of the late former ceremonial State President Canaan Banana and former ZBC chief executive officer Alum Mpofu as some of the prominent homosexuals within Zanu PF membership.

“However, others in the Politburo continue to speak against homosexuality and they tell President Mugabe to speak against it,” said Mr Chibaya.
“In Zimbabwe it is known that homosexuals are found in Zanu-PF. It is a known fact that former President Canaan Banana was in Zanu-PF.

“We also know of former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation chief executive officer Mr Alum Mpofu who was appointed by the then Minister of Information and Publicity Professor Jonathan Moyo.
“Mr Mpofu also taught my MP in Mberengwa East Makhosini Hlongwane (Zanu-PF),” he added.

Mr Chibaya said even the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act had a provision guaranteeing respect for privacy on one’s sexual orientation. He said it was important for Zanu-PF officials to be cautious when talking about homosexuality because the Gays and Lesbians Association had threatened to reveal names of the party’s members that have gay relationships.
