Movie house craze hits Mutare

Liberty Dube : Entertainment Correspondent

IT is no longer the same old story for youths and couples in Mutare entertainment wise after a group of innovative students from Mutare Poly recently set up a public movie house at Courtauld Theatre. Hardly a fortnight after the movie house was officially opened, a litany of youthful couples and individuals have been frequenting the place to watch their favourite films, ranging from comedies, horror, real life drama and documentaries.

More than 100 people, including children, paid to watch the first movies Ride Along 2, Dead Pool and Kungfu Panda on the official launch date.

This is the only cinema centre in the eastern border city after the now defunct Rainbow which was situated in the Central Business District.

The company – Ntellex Cinemas – comprises Shantel Mucheke and Exact Chipungu who are currently studying Purchasing and Supply and Information and Technology respectively.

In an interview, Mucheke said the project was meant to provide entertainment while giving youths a platform to mix and mingle.

She said the project was also meant to help youths to desist from engaging in social ills such as drug abuse and violence because of unemployment and idleness.

“This project will help us in so many ways. We are channeling some of the proceeds to our fees. We also intend to keep youths occupied and interact. We managed to present a proposal to the already established Courtauld Theatre for a partnership since we could not afford the rentals being charged in other places in the city and thankfully they agreed. This is also a chance for local film producers to showcase their creativity and artistic ingenuity since we will be able to film local movies.

“We are elated with the overwhelming response and we would like to assure fun lovers and movie addicts that we will dish out latest and popular movies in High Definition,” said Mucheke.

Snacks like burgers, candy floss and popcorn are provided. The movies are filmed in three slots from 12 noon till 9pm.
