Mozambican governor warms up to Uhuru celebrations

MOZAMBIQUE and Zimbabwe should transform their brotherhood into action, Mozambican Governor of Manica Province, Cde Alberto Mondlane, has said.

Cde Mondlane made these remarks last Friday at the pre-Independence dinner celebrations held at Golden Peacock Hotel in Mutare.

Invited to grace this year’s 35th Independence celebrations, Cde Mondlane said the two countries’ brotherhood was bonded by blood.

“We are brothers (Zimbabwe and Mozambique), not of words, but natural brothers. It is impossible for us not to be brothers when so many Mozambicans were born here and still walk this land freely. We will transform this brotherhood into action with Cde Chimene (Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs). During the liberation war, our leaders taught us how much can be achieved by working together. Our war veterans fought together in solidarity and that is what we want to take up and harness to build our nations,” said Cde Mondlane.

He added that Zimbabwe’s 35 years of total independence showed how much the country had matured and fully developed into adulthood.

He said it had passed through a myriad of socio-economic and political challenges just like Mozambique, but brighter days are yet to come.

Cde Chimene said there would not be an independent Zimbabwe without Mozambique.

She said a lot of Mozambicans perished in the process of liberating Zimbabwe, which explains why the two nations are inseparable.

“Mozambique sacrificed it all for us. As we remember Independence Day, let us also remember our Mozambican counterparts who perished in the process.

“We need to appreciate how we got our independence,” said Cde Chimene.

She added that during the struggle there used to be sell-outs and present-day sell-outs were still there. She said sell-outs do not care about the nation, but their personal, egocentric agenda’s, which is why they should have no place in Government.

Cde Chimene thanked the astute and visionary person of President Mugabe on indigenisation and empowerment initiatives citing his famous quote, ‘‘Zimbabwe will never be a colony again.’’
