BULAWAYO’S vibrant arts scene has welcomed a new rising star, Labani Hlongwane, who was recently crowned Mr Khaya Arts 2025.

The 22-year-old from Tshabalala suburb is quickly gaining recognition for his charm, modelling skills and dedication to uplifting his community.

Crowned on 13 June, Hlongwane’s win at the pageant marked a milestone in his journey, one that began with childhood dreams sparked by TV screens.

“I had always wanted to be on TV as a model since I was a kid. Watching TV commercials and music videos inspired me, it was something I felt drawn to,” he said.

Asked about his role model, he said it was none other than football and fashion icon, David Beckham.

Now, Hlongwane’s modelling career is taking shape and his dream is fast becoming a reality. He has featured in music videos including Bling 4 ft Tammy Moyo’s  Tingori 2 and Master H’s Tateguru, showing off his versatility and growing appeal in the local entertainment industry.

Hlongwane said he will use his reign as Mr Khaya Arts to tackle drug and substance abuse, an issue he feels passionate about.

“Unfortunately, many of our brothers and sisters have fallen victim to drugs. It’s crucial we speak out, take action and promote a culture of Ubuntu. Together, we can build a better, safer future for our communities.”

A former pupil of Maphisa Primary School in Sizinda and Ihlathi High School in Tshabalala, Hlongwane balances his creative pursuits with hard work as he is employed as a general hand at Monarch Steel and also serves as a peer educator, a role that reflects his deep sense of social responsibility.

The Mr Khaya Arts pageant, hosted by the dynamic Khaya Arts dance ensemble, brought together some of Bulawayo’s most promising young talent in an event that celebrated creativity, fashion and performance.

The event featured energetic showcases from Khaya Arts themselves, alongside crowd-pulling sets by Madlela Skhobokhobo, Bhila, Mzoe 7 and Mlandi Wetshitshi in a true celebration of the city’s artistic heartbeat.
