TOP Zimbabwean designer Thembani Mubochwa scooped yet another prize at South Africa’s Vodacom Durban July this year under the Classic Racewear Male category.
Durban-based Mubochwa came second after Martin Steenkamp, in the tightly contested category. Last year Mubochwa scooped the first prize at the same competition and third place in 2014.
Local celebs Pokello Nare, Mbo Mahocs, ZiFM’s Ruvheneko Parirenyatwa and Kundie with the global citizen Gilmore Tee (who was dressed by Mubochwa) also dazzled the red carpet and were part of the stars that came out to shine for one of the biggest horse racing – and fashion – events of the year.
Mbo Mahocs was dressed by Mafikizolo’s Nhlanhla Nciza’s label NNVintage, in a black and white monochrome skirt with matching black blouse with turquoise high heels to match, topped by a white trim veil fascinator.
Mubochwa said this would be the last time he showcased at the Durban July.
“God is on my side as being a foreign designer competing with the locals I had to work extra hard and this was my last showcasing at July, I’ve collected all the awards now for the past three years I believe I’ve done my part for my brand and my country at the July after being the first Zimbabwe designer to walk away with this award and scooping these awards for the past three years,” he said.
The 120th annual Vodacom Durban July took place at Greyville Racecourse in Durban on Saturday. As is the case every year, the stars outshone the horses.
Local celebs and guests in attendance weren’t fazed that the city wasn’t boasting its usual “summer all-year round” weather, and rocked their designer looks regardless.
This year’s Vodacom Durban July winner was number 14 The Conglomerate‚ ridden by Piere Strydom. In second place was number 13‚ Marinaresco, followed by Mac De Lago (No 2) and it’s My Turn (No 9).
On the fashion front, Pearl Modiadie, DJ Zinhle, Thuli Phongolo, Nomzamo Mbatha, Bonang Matheba and others caught the attention of people with their exquisite style. – Times Live/Eye Witness News/Showbiz Reporter
