Comedian Ntando Van Moyo’s mother Siphiwe Khumalo had a firsthand experience of her son’s explicit and crude jokes at the weekend.
She however has no problem with that as she recognises that this is a job like any other.
Alongside a near capacity crowd at Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel, Van Moyo, did not hold back even though his mother was in the audience.
“I don’t think much into what he says. I look at it as any other job and I enjoyed the set as this has been my first time watching him. He had asked me to come and watch and I decided to do so and I wasn’t disappointed,” said Khumalo after her son’s weekend act.
During the show when he spoke on church, sex and threw in some insults, his mother would open her mouth in shock or shake her head in disgust. Other times she would laugh at the jokes along with others.
Van Moyo has come of age as he had enough material to cover the 1 hour 15 minutes set.
His jokes touch on religion, politics and loose morals. Although there were instances when he lost some in the crowd with his jokes Van Moyo was happy with the turnout.
“I’m encouraged with the number of people who came to support me at the one-man show. I was a bit nervous with the number of people who would turn out as the room wasn’t filling up as fast as I wanted. However, when I got on stage people started to trickle in,” said Van Moyo.
Asked whether the nerves were because his mother was in the crowd, Van Moyo said he was glad she was so that she would witness what puts food on his table.
“I was excited that she was there and for her to get to see me on stage. She has been my number one fan and has been supporting me from day one. About the profanity in my jokes I know like any other mother she wouldn’t want to hear such but she’s fine about it as she knows it’s just like any other job,” said Van Moyo.
The highlight of the show was when he said President Mugabe should be honoured like many men of valour by having a whiskey named after him. He gave it a name, Gabriel’s Whiskey, with the tag “For men who have stood the test of time, which can be diluted with a dash of Grace”, drawing a rapturous applause from the crowd.
