Scottland 1-0 MWOS
IT had to be the Musonas.
Knowledge and Walter, the famous brothers from Norton, combined to all but end their hometown club MWOS’ Premier Soccer League title dream on a tense afternoon at Rufaro Stadium yesterday.
Knowledge struck in the 15th minute after a clever pass from Walter, giving Scottland a 1-0 win that leaves them on the brink of a historic championship in their debut top flight season.
With 62 points now, six clear of second-placed Simba Bhora, who lost 2-1 at Ngezi Platinum, Scottland need just one more win, against Kwekwe United, to clinch the title. If they do, they’ll become only the second club to win the league in their maiden season after Black Rhinos in 1984.
“This is one of the games that stretched our boys to the limit, especially in the second half,” said coach Tonderai Ndiraya. “I’m happy they didn’t give in to pressure. We planned for this kind of battle, and I’m impressed with how they followed the plan to the end.”
From the first whistle, Scottland looked determined. Tymon Machope nearly opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a header off a Moses Shidolo cross, but it drifted wide. Their persistence paid off moments later through the Musonas’ telepathic connection.
Walter, spotting his brother’s movement at the edge of the box, threaded a perfectly weighted pass. Knowledge, smiling as he took control, dribbled past Valentine Katsande and Tafadzwa Nyabunze before slotting calmly past Martin Mapisa.
Moments later, Godknows Murwira’s cross nearly caught Mapisa off guard, but the MWOS goalkeeper managed to recover before Abubakar Moffart cleared.
Scottland repeatedly attacked from the left flank, clearly targeting MWOS’s weak spot. Machope went close again in the 38th minute, forcing another fine save from Mapisa.
MWOS thought they had levelled just before halftime when Billy Veremu’s header hit the back of the net, only for the assistant referee’s flag to go up for offside.
The break did little to cool tempers. MWOS came out firing in the second half, creating early chances through Arthur Banda and Veremu, but Scottland’s goalkeeper Nelson Chadya and his defenders held firm.
Ndiraya’s men had to dig deep as MWOS dominated possession. Still, they created sporadic chances on the counter, including a 67th minute one on one that Shidolo skied over the bar. The Musonas combined again later, this time
Knowledge setting up Walter with a no look pass outside the box, but Mapisa pulled off another superb save.
“We knew our boys were going to run and, at times, chase shadows,” said Ndiraya. “MWOS controlled parts of the game, but our experience carried us through. The quality we have in this squad made the difference.”
MWOS coach Lloyd Mutasa was gracious in defeat.
“They put up a good fight,” he said. “Scottland created a lot of chances and could’ve won by a bigger margin. We weren’t solid at the back, but we rose to the occasion at key moments. I think we dominated possession but failed to convert.”
Mutasa added that his team’s third place position was already beyond expectations. “When we started the season, we never imagined being this high on the table. The boys have exceeded our expectations. A few slips like this were bound to happen.”
Scottland’s march toward the championship continues, powered by belief, structure, and a pair of brothers who seem determined to script their own fairy-tale in Zimbabwean football.
