IN a moment of culinary triumph that sent ripples of pride through Manicaland, Mr Kenneth Buzuzu of Holiday Inn, Mutare clinched the first prize in the Professional Chef’s Category at the Amai Traditional Cook-Out Competition national finals held on Africa Day at Mabidi Stadium in Beitbridge.
Emerging from a field of the country’s most talented culinary professionals, Mr Buzuzu impressed the national judges with his masterful preparation of traditional Zimbabwean dishes, reimagined with creativity, yet rooted in authenticity.
Mr Buzuzu had earlier in the month emerged winner of the provincial finals in Manicaland through which he earned the right to be at the national finals.
Visibly elated after receiving his trophy from the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, Mr Buzuzu remarked: “I am very excited to have my effort recognised by the national judges, and the support I have gotten from my employers and the Manicaland community in getting me this far. I would also love to appreciate the platform offered by the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, to showcase our skills.”
For his outstanding achievement, Mr Buzuzu received a US$2 500 cash prize, a four-plate gas stove, a gas tank, and a hamper of groceries, a package generously sponsored by the First Lady.
Now in its sixth year, the Amai Traditional Cook-Out Competition has become a cornerstone in the preservation and celebration of Zimbabwe’s culinary heritage.
Launched by the First Lady in 2019, the competition has grown from community-level events to a high-profile national showcase, reflecting her vision to uplift gastronomy as a pillar of culture, tourism, and identity.
