IN keeping with its vision to be the most preferred institution in Zimbabwe and beyond, Mutare Polytechnic scooped the best training institution of the year award in the Tourism and Hospitality Management sector at the recently held Megafest Tourism Awards held in Harare last week.

The event ran under the theme “Fostering Economic Growth.”

Megafest tourism awards provided the opportunity for the institution to interact with other players from the tourism industry.

Commenting at the presentation of the awards, Megafest Holdings chief executive officer Mr Tafadzwa Matsika commended the institution for producing quality students who are ready for the tourism industry, noting that the comments given by the employers, clients and students themselves during the selection process were impressive and indicative of the great strides being made by Mutare Polytechnic in the provision of quality education.

“I am delighted that Mutare Polytechnic received good comments during the judging process which resulted in the nomination for the award without the knowledge of the institution that they were under surveillance,” he said.

Tourism and Hospitality Management head of department Mrs M Mtetwa said it was pleasing to be recognised as the best training institution of the year.

“It is through hard work and commitment of both lecturers and students to strive through in competitive industries with a lot of players who are experienced, yet our students are only trainees,” she said.

Mutare Polytechnic principal Mr Tobias Kuwengwa said the institution managed to scoop the award because the students were well versed in tourism and hospitality management as they have hands-on experience.

“Our students have the hands-on experience that is required by the industry and this is achieved through the Public Private Partnerships that we have with hotels in Manicaland whereby the industry assists in the training of the students and our students always have the feel of hands-on experience by offering services during functions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mutare Polytechnic walked away with the Best Exhibit in Adult Cookery and Best Non-Profit Organisation stand at the recently held Manicaland Agricultural Show.
