Mutare rugby clubs eye Harare series

Blessing Gondokondo Sports Reporter —
MANICALAND rugby teams, Mutare Sports Club, affectionately known as the Shumbas and Mountain Lions Rugby Club are all eyeing to take the battle of supremacy outside the city into the Zimbabwe rugby series.

Mutare Sports Club and the newly formed rugby team, Mountain Lions Rugby Club being coached by bulky Brendon Chombo, battled it out last Saturday at Mutare Sports Club grounds in yet another local Sevens Tournament encounter.

Shumbas thumped Mountain Lions 22-17. The ‘battle of the lions’ started with Shumbas’ triumphant over Mountain Lions 29-7 in September this year.

This was followed by Mountain Lions’ 26-7 victory over Shumbas in the second encounter. Mckenzie Munetsi, Mutare Sports Club head coach applauded the team and said they want to repeat the same feat against Harare teams.

“We performed very well in recent matches. Despite the setbacks, results don’t mean anything. The team displayed good rugby. As noticed, so far both teams and all other teams in Manicaland playing rugby have improved their performances. Right now with this standard of play we are now eyeing the scalps of Harare teams,” said Mckenzie in an interview.

Mountain Lions also aim to leave a mark at the Zimbabwe Sevens series. Administrator for MLRC, Hopewell Gunda, said the team was ready to face any team outside Manicaland.

“The local tournaments were aimed at improving our level of playing. We are also looking forward to play in the Zimbabwe Sevens series. We have been playing good rugby since we started this year and we believe we will continue doing better in upcoming matches,” said Gunda.
