MUTARE Sports Club and Air Force will lock horns in a pre-season rugby encounter tomorrow at Mutare Sports Club. The match kicks off at 3pm. MSC coach, Mackenzie Munetsi, said the match was in preparation for the coming season. There will also be a showcase of women’s seven aside rugby and a curtain raisers match pitting Mutare Boys’ High and MSC Under-21 select.
The curtain raiser match will start at 2pm. “We want to try out combinations before the season gets underway. We also want to groom youngsters. “Air Force has always been a very competitive side that we enjoy playing against and we will definitely look forward to them bringing on their A team” said Munetsi.
Munetsi said the usual entertainment would be available tomorrow at the club. He, however, encouraged women interested in learning about rugby to come and learn a few tricks from Air Force women’s rugby club. He added that those interested in signing up for MSC can take advantage to do so on the day.
“Manicaland we are behind in terms of women’s rugby. “Harare and Matabeleland already have teams.
“As the local Zimbabwe Rugby Union board, we want to drive the agenda for women’s rugby in our schools next year and have a team ready by the time of the Dairiboard Schools Rugby Festival,” said Munetsi, who is the Manicaland ZRU secretary.
The 2015 national rugby league 15s season was marred with all sorts of challenges forcing it to return to the old system of a decentralised Northern and Southern league due to lack of a main sponsor.
Air Force which was relegated from the Super League in 2014 was playing in the Northern B League this year. The side is, however, hoping to be re-affiliated back in the super league next year. MSC will hope to improve next year after ending this year’s Northern Super League anchoring the log standings.
Harare Sports Club clinched this year’s league title and dethroned Old Hararians in the process.
