THE stage is set for the inaugural Mutasa South Youth Ball Games, scheduled to take place at Africa University today (Friday).
The event will bring together 10 wards from across the constituency for a day of soccer and netball competitions.
The initiative combines sporting rivalry with social advocacy, aiming to address pressing issues affecting young people, including drug and substance abuse, as well as child marriages.
The event seeks to raise awareness, promote engagement, and foster community support in preventing these social ills.
With drug and substance abuse on the rise in Manicaland and nationwide, the tournament serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of collective action.
Organiser, Edison Masaka confirmed that preparations are in full swing.
The day’s proceedings will commence with a procession, starting five kilometres from the Africa University grounds at 8am.
“Sport has always been a unifying force. We are using this event to send a strong message – that drugs and child marriages are robbing our youths of their future. We want them to channel their energy into something positive – sport, creativity, and growth,” he said.
The event will commence with a march at 8am, led by Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Misheck Mugadza.
Hundreds are expected to participate, demonstrating their commitment to the causes at the heart of the tournament.
Medical support will be available throughout the day, courtesy of partners like Discovery Ambulance Services.
Masaka highlighted the event’s aim to identify and nurture grassroots talent, addressing the need for exposure and resources in Zimbabwe.
“We need to conscientise our communities, especially youths against drug and substance abuse. It is all systems go, and we are expecting a successful, impactful event. We urge the community to come out in full force,” he said.
Minister Mugadza has been vocal about youth development and proactive interventions in social issues.
The tournament will feature entertainment segments, educational booths, and community-building activities, all geared toward raising awareness and celebrating Zimbabwe’s youths.
