MARVELOUS NAKAMBA is on the verge of ending his club-less spell, with Greek Super League football side Panetolikos closing in on the Zimbabwe captain’s signature.
Sources close to the veteran midfielder say talks are at an advanced stage and a deal could be finalised soon.
The 32-year-old midfielder has been without a club since leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the expiry of his contract earlier this month.
Although there has been reported interest in him from some English clubs, none seem to have yielded the signing of a deal.
Instead, it is Greek outfit Panetolikos who have moved ahead to show greater interest and are now in the race to land Nakamba, as they seek to strengthen ahead of the new season.
“Everything is moving in the right direction.
“The discussions have been positive, and both parties are keen to conclude the deal as soon as possible,” a source told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
“Marvelous wants to get back on the pitch, play regularly and enjoy football again after a difficult period’’.
The source added that regular football was key for Nakamba at this stage of his career, as it could be difficult for him to retain his place in the Warriors should he continue to be inactive.
Zimbabwe are set to begin their quest for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with an away clash against Sierra Leone in September, and the Warriors coaches will be hoping that their players are match-fit for the qualification campaign.
“He had opportunities, but he wanted the right project. At this stage of his career, regular football is more important than anything else.
“He still believes he has a lot to offer both at club level and for Zimbabwe.”
Should the move go through, it will be a new chapter for Nakamba after spells in the Netherlands, where he won the Duutch Cuo with Vitesse Arnhem, and Belgium, where he was part of Club Brugge’s Belgian Pro League title-winning cast.
In England, Nakamba first arrived at Aston Villa before having stints with Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday, while in Greece, he will join fellow Zimbabwe international Tino Kadewere, who is currently on the books of Aris Thessaloniki, whom he joined in July 2025.
Now, a Panetolikos switch for Nakamba could see the two Zimbabwe internationals playing in the same league.
