THE National Gallery of Zimbabwe opens up doors for the New Year tonight (Friday) by hosting more than 15 performing and visual artistes from Mutare and Rusape. The year 2014 saw the birth and establishment of several talented artists and artistes from across Mutare District who exhibited exceptional talent through the monthly editions of the poetry/music session, popularly known as Shaurai.
The session, which has close to two years running, is a platform where visual artistes meet and perform on a Friday of every mid-month.
Prolific comedian and visual artist Tendai Maradze, rapper and poet Kritic Igwee, poet, singer and poet David “Flexo” Mutanda, writer Simba Kahwenga, guitarist Kamara were among last year’s shinning stars.
This contingent and other sprouting artistes from Penhalonga and Rusape are tonight expected to unleash their new productions.
Although various challenges like lack of financial support bedeviled the gallery, they managed to foster their core aims of promoting and enriching visual arts like photography, painting, traditional dance and sculpture.
NGZ regional director (Mutare) Elizabeth Muusha, in an interview recently, said people in Mutare should brace up for an exhilarating year.
“We will continue promoting art and artists. We are grateful with the support we got from stakeholders and artistes themselves.
“We are hoping to have a wonderful year. We are slowly working towards achieving our core mission of promoting and nurturing local talent in visual arts. We would like to thank various individuals as well as schools for supporting us.
“We aim towards strengthening our core business in luring people to support visual art particularly paintings and sculpture.
“Friday’s event is an ideal platform to lure customers and clients as well as promote the beauty of visual arts,” she said.
