TELONE striker Washington Navaya continued his remarkable run in front of goal, scoring his 17th of the season in a 1–1 draw against GreenFuel at Ascot Stadium on Saturday.

The strike not only kept his team’s hopes alive but also placed him within touching distance of this year’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Golden Boot.

Navaya’s tally now matches last season’s winning mark set by Lynoth Chikuhwa, and with only two matches left, the TelOne forward looks well on course to claim the top scorer’s crown, and a deserved place among the Soccer Stars of the Year.

“It’s always pleasing to do well for your team. It’s not an individual effort, it’s all happening courtesy of teamwork,” said Navaya, the former Highlanders forward who grew up in Gweru’s Mtapa township.

The 29-year old’s story is rooted in his hometown. From kicking a ball on the dusty fields of Mtapa to representing his city’s flagship club, Navaya’s rise has been steady. He attended St Michael’s Primary School, went on to Nashville High, and completed his A-Levels at Mambo High School, all within Gweru’s football loving neighbourhoods.
