A neighbourhood officer from Seke Village was yesterday sentenced to 13 years in prison for raping a 21-year-old woman.

Phillip Nyamvura appeared before Chitungwiza regional magistrate Mrs Estere Chivasa, facing rape, aggravated indecent assault and assault charges.

He pleaded not guilty, but was convicted after a full trial.

Mrs Chivasa initially sentenced Nyamvura to 15 years in prison, but suspended two years on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutor Mr Tendai Mukariri proved that on May 9 this year, at around 0300 Nyamvura forcefully kicked the door to the victim’s (name withheld) bedroom and went inside.

He woke her up and ordered her to kneel down and clap hands for him, but she refused and he assaulted her thrice on her shoulders with his hands and she complied.

He then made her to lie on the floor and inserted his fingers into her private parts and she started crying.

She heard somebody knocking on the door, but Nyamvura threatened to kill the person.

He then raped her once and left. The complainant, who is married, revealed the matter to her neighbour the following day at around 1100 hours.

The neighbour advised her to make a police report, which led to Nyamvura’s arrest.
