SIX people died, while five others were injured in a road traffic accident involving a Toyota Vitz and a bus that occurred along Chivhu-Nyazura Road yesterday.
In a separate crash on the same day, one person was killed, while four were injured when a Toyota Camry vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and hit a tree in Nyanga.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed both accidents.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on January 28 at around 2:45pm at the 102 kilometre peg along Chivhu-Nyazura Road in which six people were killed, while five others were injured. A Toyota Vitz vehicle with five passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with an AVM bus with 24 passengers on board. The bodies of the victims were taken to Murambinda Mission Hospital mortuary for post mortem, while the injured are admitted at the same hospital,” he said.
Police have since named three of the six victims in the first accident.
“Three victims were identified by their next of kin as Dzingai Mutsaru (44) of Muguta Village, Nyashanu in Buhera, Eliah Makaza (44) of Muguta Village, Nyashanu in Buhera and Richard Kanongovere (33) of Kanongovere Village, Murambinda. The names of the other three victims will be released after they have been identified by their next of kin,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.
In the second accident, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said: “One person was killed, while four others were injured when a Toyota Camry vehicle with four passengers on board veered off the road and hit a tree at the six kilometre peg along Dombo-Nyanga Road on January 28 around 12 noon. The body of the victim was taken to Nyanga District Hospital mortuary for post mortem while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.”
Police urged motorists to exercise caution and patience at all times on the road.
