ORGANISERS of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) are set to call off the January tournament amid worries over the Omicron Covid-19 variant.

Zimbabwe are part of the 24 teams set to take part at the biennial football showpiece.
A 40-man provisional Warriors squad is set to go into camp on December 23.

However, less than a month before the first AFCON finals game kicks off, reports from the French media suggest that the tournament could be called off, amid concerns from national team coaches.

A number of English Premier League teams had been due to lose players for the duration of the tournament, with Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, revealing talks had been taking place with a view of delaying the release of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita.

Mane’s Senegal play Zimbabwe on January 10, before the Warriors face Malawi four days later.

Zimbabwe then conclude their group campaign with Keita’s Guinea on January 18.
But now, after a CAF meeting on Wednesday, it’s expected the competition will be postponed indefinitely.
