NEW: Calls for Council to modernise Harare libraries, recreational facilities

THE Harare City Council audit committee says there is need for modernisation of the city’s libraries and other recreational facilities.

Speaking during a tour of the city’s libraries and swimming pools last week, committee chairperson Councillor Blessing Duma said the facilities had been neglected for a long time.

“During this tour, we visited Mount Pleasant and we noticed that our libraries do not have Wi-Fi and they are not up to date,” he said.

“The first thing we need to do is to make sure that the money that is paid by people to use our libraries is invested back into those libraries.”

Councillor Duma said the city needed to tweak its donor policy to attract more book donations for the libraries.

“The majority of the books that we have are from donors,” he said. “This means that we have to look into our donor policy so that we will be in a position to accept more books from the donor community.

“We need to move with the trends and make sure that the library has internet and all the necessary modern infrastructure.”
