A CALL has been made for Government to enact statutes that clearly protect the girl child as well as expedite the alignment of Marriage Law with the national constitution as one of the major ways to fight child marriages.
Speaking to The Manica Post on the sidelines of Family Aids Caring Trust (FACT) Zimbabwe’s five-day media tour of Children Tariro (CT) and DREAMS projects in Manicaland, the organisation’s legal coordinator, Mr Trevor Nyatsanza said the Marriage Bill has taken too long to be enacted into law.
Mr Nyatsanza noted that there are gaps in the legal framework that have left young girls and women at risk of being exploited and subjected to child marriages.
FACT Zimbabwe, with support from PEPFAR is implementing CT as well as Determined, Resilient, Empowered, Aids-free, Mentored and Safe (DREAMS) projects in Mutare, Mutasa, Makoni, Buhera and Chipinge districts of Manicaland and Gutu District in Masvingo Province.
After being initiated in 2015, the DREAMS projects will come to an end in September this year.
