PEARSON Nyasha won the Carling Black Label National Pool men’s final held at Reserve Bank Sports Club in Mabelreign on Saturday.
He won 5-3 against Munashe Dombojena.
In the female finals, Somaya Mlauzi emerged the winner after a 5-2 win over Erica Manyangadze.
The Carling Black Label Pool tournament has been running under the sponsorship of Delta Beverages for over 10 years.
It is run in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Pool Association (ZIPA).
The winners walked with a pool table each and $700 000 richer. The runners-up pocketed $350 000 each, $200 000 for third-placed, and $100 000 for fourth-placed players.
The Carling Black Label National Pool Tournament returned to the scene this year after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Regional finals were hosted across the country with a total of 96 players taking part in the finals.
Tendai “Inspector” Mubaiwa and Simangele “Flatta” Moyo both failed to defend their titles.
Nyasha said this was his finest hour.
“I am really excited about this achievement. I really can’t explain how happy I am.
“It was a tough one to get considering the competition level that was shown here.
“There are a lot of youngsters coming up who are all aiming for the ultimate prize.
“There were some veterans who were aiming for the prize. “So, the competition was really up there and it was difficult to keep the cue down with all the fans who were present.
“I am really humbled by the win and would like to thank everyone who supported me and the sponsors who set the big stage for us to shine,” said Nyasha.
Mubaiwa said he was disappointed by his failure to defend his title when he got knocked out in the second round.
“I am disappointed but it’s part of the game.
“There is always a next time and I am happy for the new champion. Today wasn’t my day,” he said.
