New champions crowned at volleyball tourney

PRINCE Edward and Msengezi High schools were crowned champions in the boys’ and girls’ categories of the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) volleyball tournament held at Luveve High School at the weekend.

Msengezi beat Roosevelt High 3-1 in the girls’ final, while Prince Edward beat Msengezi High 3-0 in the boys’ final.

For their efforts, the winning teams went away with floating trophies and shields.

Nash head-in-charge of volleyball in Bulawayo Ntombizodwa Gumede marvelled at the abundant talent that was on display throughout the tournament.

She, however, lamented the unconvincing performances by Bulawayo schools.

The province’s representatives in the boys’ category Luveve High were ranked eighth after the competition, while Cowdray Park High were 12th.

In the girls’ category, Mpopoma High came third and Luveve High 10th.

“It is a big challenge for Bulawayo schools as they struggled to match other teams, but we hope to improve in coming competitions.

“You will find that schools like Msengezi have represented the country at national level in the girls’ category, so they have the best players in the country. These schools scout for talent and offer players scholarships so most players want to join them,” Gumede said.

Bulawayo province had some good individual performances from Mpopoma High’s Tariro Zarima, who scooped the Best Setter accolade in the girls’ category.
